The Event Launching
of "Share the Road"
The State Bicycle Advisory
Committee (SBAC) and the
Minnesota Department of Transportation joined together
in the May 19th launch of this public education program.
Lt. Gov./Transportation Commissioner kicked off "Share
the Road," the state's new bicycle safety education
program promoting bicycle safety on and along Minnesota's
roads.

Commissioner Molnau welcomed
event riders and read a proclamation from Governor
Pawlenty proclaiming week May 15 - 21, 2005, as
"Bike Safely to Work Week" in Minnesota.
Other speakers included Saint Paul Mayor Randy
Kelly and Department of Public Safety Commissioner
Michael Campion. |

Master of Ceremonies was David
LaPorte, University of Minnesota Professor,
and lead promoter/coordinator for the Great
River Energy Bike Festival. LaPorte opened
the event with a spirited introduction. The
enthusiastic throng of some forty-five Bike
Safely to Work Day riders and numerous supporters
welcomed the bike safety program with warm
applause. |

The May 19th event ended with Shimano Marketing
and Bicycling Magazine announcing the Twin
Cities recipients of new 50 Giant bicycles.
The Twin Cities was designated as one of
the ten locations in the nation to receive
50 new bicycles. The recipients were selected
based on essays written that focused on
using a bicycle to commute to work. After
the presentation, the new bike owners rode
a inaugural lap in front of the Capitol.
