The Event Launching of "Share the Road"

The State Bicycle Advisory Committee (SBAC) and the Minnesota Department of Transportation joined together in the May 19th launch of this public education program. Lt. Gov./Transportation Commissioner kicked off "Share the Road," the state's new bicycle safety education program promoting bicycle safety on and along Minnesota's roads.

Commissioner Molnau welcomed event riders and read a proclamation from Governor Pawlenty proclaiming week May 15 - 21, 2005, as "Bike Safely to Work Week" in Minnesota. Other speakers included Saint Paul Mayor Randy Kelly and Department of Public Safety Commissioner Michael Campion.

Master of Ceremonies was David LaPorte, University of Minnesota Professor, and lead promoter/coordinator for the Great River Energy Bike Festival. LaPorte opened the event with a spirited introduction. The enthusiastic throng of some forty-five Bike Safely to Work Day riders and numerous supporters welcomed the bike safety program with warm applause.

The May 19th event ended with Shimano Marketing and Bicycling Magazine announcing the Twin Cities recipients of new 50 Giant bicycles. The Twin Cities was designated as one of the ten locations in the nation to receive 50 new bicycles. The recipients were selected based on essays written that focused on using a bicycle to commute to work. After the presentation, the new bike owners rode a inaugural lap in front of the Capitol.
