Safety Videos

The League of Illinois Bicyclists, with funding from the Illinois Department of Transportation, has produced a nearly seven-minute video on motorist-bicyclist safety. This video can be viewed and downloaded from their website. A copy of the video can also be requested from Mn/DOT Bicycle and Pedestrian Section. In the "Sidepaths and Sidewalks" section of the video, there is a violation of the rules of the road that was overlooked by the producers of the video.  Plus, there are additional bicyclist and motorist errors that should also be pointed out and discussed. Discussion of these errors can present a valuable opportunity to teach the particulars of who has the right of way when crossing a street under a variety of circumstances.  This part of right of way law is somewhat confusing and can benefit from special attention.

The Bicycle Coalition of Maine has produced several Public Service announcments. The coalition has created a new Share the Road video and audio spots featuring Eric Weinrich, the Bicycle Coalition of Maine's official spokesperson.

The Delaware Valley Regional Planning Commission (DVRPC), in partnership with the Pennsylvania Department of Transportation (PennDOT), is sponsoring a Share the Road campaign, designed to educate both motorists and bicyclists about our rights and responsibilities as we jointly use the region's highways. Their video can be viewed or ordered from their site.

Rules of the Road and other Safety Tips

The League of American Bicyclists is a leading advocate for bicycling and bicycle safety. Its Better Bicycling Fact Sheets provide a wide range of strategies and techniques for bicycling safely on America’s streets, roads and highways. They are available at www.bikeleague.org.

The League of American Bicyclists BikeEd program is based on the concept of Effective Cycling, developed by John S. Forester, which states that “Cyclists fare best when they act and are treated as drivers of vehicles.” Forester’s own Web site is available at www.johnforester.com/.

Many state Departments of Transportation publish bicycling guides or manuals, including safety and other useful information. The Colorado Bicycle Manual is generally regarded as one of the best. It is available at www.dot.state.co.us/.

The Pennsylvania and other state bicycle manuals are based on a manual titled Bicycling Street Smarts: Riding Confidently, Legally and Safely, by John S. Allen. Allen’s booklet can be viewed at www.bikexprt.com/.

The Florida Department of Transportation does not offer a single manual, but a series of booklets with many tips for safe cycling. They are available here.

Bicycle safety is not only a function of bicyclist behavior. The National Highway Transportation Safety Administration has developed a series of National Strategies for Advancing Bicycle Safety, which include enforcement and facilities goals. Click here, then click on Goals: 1, 2, 3, 4, 5. Minnesota state laws pertaining to bicycling can be viewed here.
